Our History
Udayan Hospital is the flagship institution of the Indira Gopal Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) — and at its heart is a story that spans two generations of a family bound together by medicine, service, and an unshakeable belief that exceptional healthcare belongs to everyone.

How it began
The founding spirit
A legacy of medicine and service
That belief was first embodied by Dr. Gopal Prasad Sinha — a celebrated neurologist and lecturer at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), a member of the Institutional Ethics Committee of the Indian Council of Medical Research, and a recipient of the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours. He dedicated his life to the practice and teaching of medicine. Beside him stood his wife, Dr. Indira Sinha — a professor, social-work leader and principal of a women's college, who championed patient rights, equal treatment and health equity for all.
2001
A vision takes form
His son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Ajay Alok and Dr. Geetika Sinha, grew up steeped in that vision and chose to make it their life's work. Together they founded the Indira Gopal Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS).
2012
Udayan Hospital opens
They built Udayan Hospital from the ground up — turning a family's deepest values into a living, breathing institution serving the people of Bihar.
Today
A living legacy
More than a decade later, that purpose remains unchanged. These values are not simply written on walls — they are lived every day by every person who walks through these doors.
